I'm looking to get a DSLR for video recording of having someone walk around at expos and interviewing people with a handheld microphone. I don't have a DSLR yet but I know that audio really matters for me. The Canon T3I is cheaper than many professional video cameras with XLR inputs. Wireless solutions cost a lot.

Would plugging in a SM58 mic, for example, with a XLR to 1/4" to 3.5mm into the Canon T3I sound good? (Compared to the Canon XHA1 for example, which I borrowed before).

Also since I haven't gotten the T3I yet, and my budget is $900 should I get a video camera instead?

You could always plug in an external microphone on an iPhone4 and get somewhat similar results.
