My ISP claims I am getting the fastest speed available in my area, this speed SUCKS! Who do I throw some cash at to get this fixed? Wanna see my speedtest result? http://www.speedtest.net/result/1376721488.png I was promised "up to 8 meg". |

Either try to get a new ISP or rough it out. sorry |

If your ISP won't give you faster Internet, either switch ISPs, or use Opera (web browser) and take advantage of the Turbo feature which will drastically reduce the file size of the web page which means that will load faster on slower connections. |

It could also be interference or bad wiring in your House. |

I'm on an "Up to" 20Mb package with BT here in the UK. I get between 1.5 and 2.5MB on a good day. My speeds were just as slow as yours until I tweaked my routers settings and now I've managed to boost is a little. Internet speeds depend on how far you are away from the exchange, how far away you are from the access point, whether or not you're using wireless or wired etc. There are many many things that can contribute to a slow internet connection. One thing you should try is changing your routers wireless channel. Most non tech-savy people will leave their router on the deafult channel that shipped with their router, if there are 10 other people in your area on the same wireless channel then it can cause interference and slow down your connection. You wireless connection works on the electromagnetic spectrum, sometims being high on the spectrum can improve your connection and other times it will deteriorate. You should experiment usually wireless channels and see if you get any improvements. You can usually enter your router settings via a web browser by typing in your internal IP address into the address bar. Another factor could be that your phone line cannot handle a faster connection. Don't forget, your connection is only as fast as the phone line linking the connection to your router. You should check the quality of the phone line coming into your house and replace it if necessary. If you're using ADSL fillers then ensure they're not broken and that they're plugged in correctly. Since you're paying for a service it should be in your best interest to contact your ISP and complain, don't give them money for nothing. Hey, I'm on Talktalk. Its amazing how even in London, we have such slow speeds. I have already done these things, I've switched to wired instead of wireless to eliminate that problem completely. I've replaced microfilters and complained SEVERAL times, I speak to the technical support at talktalk a couple of times a month and go through the same ordeal of explaining to them that its already plugged into the BT master test socket and I am not a "non tech savvy" person. The service is rubbish, the customer support is rubbish. I am definitly moving from them once the contract finishes - the trouble is, everyone is using BT's phone line so what difference will it make when they say they are supplying the fastest speed possible? 1
I recommend you contact Ofcom, they can help you with a complaint: http://bit.ly/rpYeox |

One other thing that might help is contacting your ISP to make them aware of the issue. Usually they will put you on hold for a while, but a phone call solved my problem. I was supposed to get 20Mbps down, but I was only getting 5. After a 2 hour call, I found out that somehow, some of the download bandwidth was going to the TV (or at least that was their excuse). Anyway, the problem was fixed, so it might work for you too. |
