Signs of a bad CABLE MODEM

Recently I have had interest outages, and when I power down & boot up my Cable Modem the interent connections are usualy restored.

How can I tell if my Cable Modem is going bad or The outages are a result of my ISP?

I talked with my ISP & discovered the following: 1. No outages were in my area 2. My Modem simply may not be picking up the radio frequencey

My Modem is @ least 4 years old, here it is: MOTOROLA SB5101U SURFboard Cable Modem USB and Ethernet 10/100Base-T DOCSIS 2.0 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16825122011

Does anyone have a favored Cable Modem?

I use to have that exact same modem and when it got to the age your at now it did the exact same thing. All the sudden there were "outages" that lasted anywhere from five minutes to an hour. The main thing I noticed right away was that my speed kept slowing way down. Then it would pick back up for a while and then slowed way down again.

Whatever modem you go with, make sure you get a DOCSIS 3 it's what everyone is going to and only the 3.0 can handle the faster speeds that the ISP's are starting to provide.

I'm glad I wasn't alone Thanks for the tip, I notice the modem I have is DOCSIS 2 (old gen)

I'll look for a modem with that uses "DOCSIS 3" or greater

You're welcome. I purchased a Cisco DPC3010 DOCSIS 3.0 that I've been very happy with.

Where'd you get it? I checked online, newegg doesn't carry Ciscos; the best ones they have are Motorolas

I got mine from my ISP since the guy was already at the house, otherwise I was just gonna run to best buy. You can probably find it online though.
