Hello Lockergnome! I recently got the Roadrunner Lightning service from Bright House networks and I find it extremely awesome. But I have a small problem, the installer gave me a really short coaxial cable from the wall to the modem and its not enough to properly put it on my work desk. Will replacing it with a Dynex or Audivox cable from my local Best Buy affect performance or anything in general? I plan on getting a 25ft cable to properly place the cable on a wall cord cover kit. I'm not sure, on how long the cable has to be, to start effecting it, in my situation, I have bright house as well, with Road Runner Turbo, and I was getting over 200ms ping times, when the box was in my other room, on a very short cable, I moved my modem to the room where my computer is at, added in a HD signal boost splitter, and used a 6 foot cable, and I'm getting max 15ms ping times, it's not necessarily the length of the cable, it's the strength of the line, that's going to effect you. I would say test it, like on speedtest.net at any random given time, during the day/evening, and see how much you're effected, because the simple solution would be to go to home depot, get an HD signal boost splitter, which are less then $10 and a 1.5ft cable and add that to the line, if you're getting high ping times, and see if that fixes your problem. awesome, thanks Jim, it really helped a lot, come morning, i'll go ahead and install the new cable Alright cool, yeah just keep checking your speed and ping times, like even during peak hours I get 15ms pings on my connection to speedtest. just finished doing the installation, I actually have a lower ping now, used to get 15 and now I get 14. :) All is functioning pretty well, thanks for all your help! |

The problem with any electical signal is that it will fade out over distance according to the input strength. The in-house distance isn't gonna do much to your signal unless it is already coming in bad into you home from the ISP. In this case, you could ask you ISP to look at it, maybe they can put a stronger signal on the cable. If not, you could simply use a signal booster as suggested earlier. |
