I need one because my brother and nephews download laggy games and bloatware along with viruses. I have tried the K9 blocker and it doesn't respond most of the time. The software can be freeware or not, at this point i don't care because, even though I'm a geek i hate when people change my pc settings and install stuff. I end up with malware and viruses even BSOD. I use chrome, firefox and,IE9.

The Hosts file is the best website blocker if you run an OS that has one. I don't know what OS('s) you run so i'll give you this as a reference for now. If you find that your OS has a Hosts file, then, search "editing hosts file in [your OS]" on Youtube for a tutorial if available.

For the purpose of blocking malicious websites, I recommend the "WOT" browser extension and the "SiteAdvisor" browser extension. Also you can find lists of IP addresses to block in your Hosts file by category by searching "[category] IP filter list" in your search engine.

wot has a habit of giving warnings when there is nothing on the site to worry about.

I know it does but at it's easy to see when that's the case, you can just click the link to the rating & comments page and after you see something like "they're a bunch of liberals", you know it's safe. Plus, your better safe then sorry.

Yes, edit the host file as mentioned in previous comment.

I just use my router's built-in blocking. It confuses the heck out of people, because instead of an "ACCESS DENIED" page, it just refuses to connect to the site.

My school uses lightspeed systems for website blocking. It's a little TOO strict for my liking though.

My school also uses Lightspeed Systems. I've got a whole collection on lightspeed failure/screenshots...

I know. I'll bet that this website is blocked at your school huh? And it was always because the site was rated "r". That, to me, is really sad.

If you use Google Chrome, Stayfocusd would probably be perfect then you can just hide other browsers deep in the start menu and you'll be good to go.

Stayfocusd

If you're using FF or Chrome you can use Leech Block that way you can set times and the sites you want to block ... I also think it works in IE.
