I personally don't like distributions that give you the most barebones functionality possible. I like a little more of a user experience. I also don't like bloated operating systems that require a supercomputer to run. I prefer lightweight linux distributions like Lubuntu or Joli OS to get the job done.
I've been able to get Lubuntu to run on a 10 year old machine, and it ran pretty darn fast, so if you're looking for a lightweight distribution, I'd have to recommend Lubuntu.
