Nothing wrong with them

I use them to update BIOS on motherboards.

i don't know about your bios but asus bios updates now are larger than what a floppy disk will hold.

Then you split the update into multiple floppy disks. Remember the "Please insert Disk X" prompts?

I was finally able to rid myself of them when I updated my camera a couple years ago. I had to use them a lot longer than I would have liked, I moved to flash drives about five years ago.

i still have mine in the tower, but it is not connected to the mobo. i also disabled it in device manager, and in vm i also removed it. anything that might require a floppy these days can be done via usb.

How can you disable something in Device Manager if it isn't connected to the motherboard?

the floppy even when not connected to the pc still shows up in my computer. once you disable it in device manager it is then removed from my computer. i always thought it was funny that windows will show a disconnected piece of hardware.

Ha, really? I've never actually noticed that myself, you'd of though I would have considering everything.

That's kinda stupid.

Windows 7 still keeps the controller (and driver) active for floppies.

Nope, I don't even remember the last time I used one.

The company I used to work for still uses them every day for saving classified advertising from a DOS program to be read by modern software. Failure to see a need to upgrade is one of several reasons I no longer work for that company.

One could really wonder about any serious company that would still be using floppies on purpose in 2011.
