A thought came into my mind when discussing electrical cars at work. Why is it that I can't charge a battery instantly or at least during much shorter time? It takes a very long time to charge an electric car battery, as well as a mobile phone battery or laptop battery. Why is that?

Purely due to the fact that they aren't as far with batteries as you might think they are. If you would try to instantly charge any batterie it would explode and all the highly toxic materials would spread over an 10-15 foot radius (purely an estimate). Plus I don't think that we will get instantly charging batteries within the next 5 years.

It's odd seeing as how they can't do it with a lot of batteries and yet they have AA NiMH batteries that can be charged in 15 minutes...

Yeah but those also drain faster plus they can't give enough power for something like a laptop.

I'm quite sure that all batteries have a certain amount of voltage they can take, if you were to try and charge one instantly then the voltage would be far too high for the battery and, as nitocrime stated, it would blow up.

They've made a prototype battery that will run for approx. 30 years. It's called the Betavoltaic battery. I doubt that it will come onto the market anytime soon but when it does.. :)
