I am going off to college and I want desktop for my dorm. I have about $1,500.00 put away for this and I want something to use to hook up my PS3 as well. I don't need a big HDD or a really fast processor. So which would be better for my price range and needs?

Save your money and buy a PC.

I would suggest that you get a Macbook Pro 13/15 and get a 24-27" external display which has VGA, DVI & HDMI ports so that you can also connect your PS3 to it and can also use it along with your MBP

I'd agree with this as well, but add a couple/few more things, 1) A usb or bluetooth mac compatible keyboard of your choice. 2) A usb or bluetooth mac compatible mouse of your choice. 3) A USB Hub (optional, can be used as a docking of sorts for your usb devices, meaning only a single usb cable to plug into the macbook.) 4) Laser monochrome printer for b/w printing. Laser is much more economical for printing than your common inkjet. (optional)

There shouldn't be anything that you can do on an imac that you can't do on a Macbook Pro. Though this definitely depends on what exactly you're going to be doing with it.

not that I know off.. it'll just take longer time. A 24" monitor will cost you about 100-200€ depending on quality. A MBP about 1300€. The good thing about the MBP is that you can carry it with you to class and type stuff down.

21.5" is really cheap but the 27" is a real beaut'. I'd totally get the 27" if I could.

Be clever, 27 only. 21 is really small.

I have a 27" iMac (2011) next to the 24" Cinema Display (forget resolution, could but 1920x1280 or something) and I have the say, the real-estate on the 27" iMac is definitely worth spending extra money for. I assume the 21.5" iMac has a similar resolution to most 1080p monitors which is decent, but in my opinion it's worth spending the extra money on a gorgeous 2560x1440 display.
