I have a 60" Sony TV connected via VGA to a netbook running ubuntu. In the Monitors Preferance Panel, it says "SONY 46" TV" and only uses 46" Of the TV. Do I need a driver or what?sony,

I would try HDMI. When I connect my 1080p 46" Sony TV to my notebook using VGA it doesn't use the full screen, but when I use HDMI it uses the full screen. It shouldn't need a video as long as you have your video card driver. Maybe try updating your video card driver though from the card's website.

make sure the laptop is outputting the native resolution of the TV, if the laptop is set to clone the display then it will not fill the entire screen, it needs to be set as a primary display thats not cloned or a secondary display in a dual view mode.
