Is it stupid that T-Mobile stores are still being built?

So I heard from my friend that a T-Mobile store is opening in the corner of 149th and Grand Concourse, Bronx, NY 10451. Is it stupid that a T-Mobile store is opening even if AT&T might get it's hands on T-Mobile in March 2012?

By the way if the service sucks, I am canceling my T-Mobile phone, had it since 2003! They sure don't want to lose me!

AT&T will own T-Mobile. T-Mobile will not change its name. They will be a subsidiary of of AT&T. The reason AT&T is buying them is so they can use their towers. T-Mobile users will then have better coverage as will AT&T. You will still be able to get a plan through T-Mobile after the purchase goes through. and they'll still have different phones, that means possibly no iPhone for T-mobile users. Also, I'm not 100% sure, but I think T-mobile's data is on a different frequency than AT&T which it will most likely remain on.

Best answer in this bunch. I expect that this will be a good thing, so long as AT&T's horrible customer service isn't in order.

Uh, AT&T wants to merge with T-Mobile. That means, T-Mobile goes away, and everything becomes AT&T-branded. Yes, it's true they want T-Mobile for it's network, but T-Mobile will be non-existent if the merger is approved. You will buy and renew your plan through AT&T, choose your phone through AT&T, and pay whatever AT&T tells you to pay.

EDIT: I should also mention that T-Mobile devices will lose their HSPA/3G service. AT&T wants to use that spectrum for their LTE rollout, which will be incompatible with existing T-Mobile HSPA/3G devices.

There IS an option/opinion that TMO would actually stay as a subdivision of AT&T -- in order to appease the regulators, and to manage the lower markets (e.g. non-smartphone, prepaid) type of markets. The spectrum piece is really the ONLY part of this that I see AT&T really caring about.

This is true. Either way, though, the U.S. wireless market will see a loss of competition, considering it's probably not in a subsidiaries best interest to try and compete with their parent company.

No. It would be stupid if T-Mobile did NOT continue opening stores and operating as normal. If they dropped everything and just sat around until the merger decision, what sort of situation do you think they'd be in if it turns out they wouldn't be merging? They would have lost a lot of valuable time that could have been spent improving themselves as a company.

As a side note, I highly doubt the merger will be approved. If it were to be approved, it would prove just how clueless our government really is.

Eddie is MUCH closer to right IMHO; TMO continues to invest and is actually bound by the merger agreement to spend a certain amount of $$ on upgrades, capital expenditures, etc... I have seen several articles recently which lead me to believe that some analysts are not giving the merger as much of a chance to be approved. Let's hope that happens -- I am a TMO fan.

Agreed. AT&T has made bad decisions and now they're looking for an easy way out. While they spent time and money pushing the iPhone, Verizon and T-Mobile were spending time and money improving their networks. Now that AT&T can no longer count on the iPhone for subscribers, they are trying to snatch up T-Mobile's network.

In fact, analysts are now saying that the deal is more likely to fall through, especially given the recently leaked document on the FCC website, which basically says it would be 10x cheaper for AT&T to spend money building out their network instead of buying T-Mobile.

I also think that AT&T is hoping that T-Mobile customers go along with AT&T after the merge. I don't want that to happen because that will make a huge gap in between Verizon/AT&T and Sprint. Competition is good.
