I'm looking for a laptop for video editing. 3d Graphic modelling. Movie stuff. I'm considering getting a Macbook Pro but currently, it is out of my budget. The Macbook Pro (2011 15" 2.2ghz i7) has what I need. Also I would be able to use Mac OS X which allows me to use Final Cut and stuff. Any suggestions for a "now" Laptop that has what I need or should I just wait and save up for a Macbook Pro that I would probably be able to get next June. Wait and save up or not?

What about an Alienware. I knew some folks that had them that they didnt game on them, rather used them for 3D modeling.

you're not seriously buying a laptop dedicated to 3D graphics modelling and video editing. You need a force to be reckoned with. The alienware is probably a good bet. You can run final cut pro on windows.

I didn't mean 3D modelling specifically but intense programs like that. Special effects and stuff. I also need portability.

FCP has traditionally only been available for Mac. Before you commit to FCP, you should read up on the latest version. It has negative reviews across the board. Adobe Premiere Pro CS5, on the other hand, has been surprisingly good and works on Mac/Windows.

Either way I need a new computer.

I use a HP Pavilion dv7t-3000 for editing on the go. Premiere CS5 runs fine, even with HD DSLR footage. Photoshop is also fine. After Effects is a little choppy, but I usually do the heavy graphics on the desktop anyway. Laptop gets hot, though.

If you go the Adobe path, make sure you get a 64-bit OS. They're pushing everything that direction (for the better). Also, look at the approved video card list on their site and you get a speed boost in rendering times.

The laptop's a few years old now. I'm sure there's a better one out there. Specs: Intel i7 Q-720 @1.60GHz, 4GB memory, Win 7 64-bit, NVIDIA GeForce GT 230M

For what it's worth, a lot of industry folks still cling to Avid editing systems. Never been my personal favorite, though. Huge learning curve. Check the specs before buying a computer if Avid is a requirement.

Well, you COULD go with Alienware if you don't like OS X, but other than that, the MacBook Pro would be fine. They might have an update ready by next June.
