AM3 processors are backwards-compatible with AM2/AM2+ boards. The boards usually require a BIOS update first, however.

thanks...how do I do a bios update???

Odds are it already has the update. Usually manufacturers applied a "AM3 Ready" sticker to the motherboard box to the boards that shipped with the update. If the board isn't up-to-date, check the motherboard manufacturer's website.

so let's say I install the cpu right now and the motherboard doesn't have the update what will happen?can I use the pc?

No. Unless you have updated the BIOS then the board may not recognise the new CPU. Tell us the model of motherboard and that of the CPU and we will do what we can to provide further instructions.

You will need to know the model. Either by opening up the PC and looking at it, or using a software hardware auditing tool. My preference software-wise is Speccy, though there are others. http://www.piriform.com/speccy

Once you have the model, then check the manufacturers website.

The answer is Yes & NO. Some AM2 & AM2+ boards will accept AM3 CPUs with a BIOS update, most DO NOT. The motherboard mfg should have a list of CPUs that will work in the mobo as well as any BIOS updates. It is very likely your friend will need a new mobo as well.

Also being a point that as described above there are AM2 and AM2+ boards. AM2 will not accept AM3, while AM2+ might.
