Is it ok to use windows sample songs as background sound in my youtube videos? I'm asking this because "Kalimba" sounds like it could be good background noise for my youtube videos. can I?

Here is YouTube's take on derivative works: The phrase "derivative works" refers to creations such as remixes, where you might take images or sound from a recording and edit it into something new. Although the new video is your own creation, the images and sound you've used still belong to someone else. It doesn't matter if you recorded it for free from television, purchased a DVD, purchased a video game, or recorded it yourself at an event—you may still need permission from the copyright holder(s) of the material you drew upon to make your new creation.

It's worth a shot to contact the original content creator, but I've used others' music in videos and YouTube will link to their content on the video.

Ok... I'll think about it...

It depends if the original creator cares to file a copyright claim. Though considering it's a sample I doubt the creator would care.
