Hi ive got a gigabyte motherboard that uses a Realtek audio controler. I use my computer for a media PC aswell and I have 5.1 speakers plugged in aswell as headphones. In the Realtek audio manager all the speakers are set up properly with them each set correctly as well as the headphones set as headphones. If I play a 5.1 audio track through the speakers it works properly although through the headphones it just plays the audio meant for the front right and left speakers. But if I play just a 2.0 audio file then it plays properly out of the headphones. If i set realtek to work as a stero insted of 5.1 then it plays the 5.1 track through the headphones properly. But if ive told the jack to work as headphones then it should send a stero signal out that jack shouldnt it? Is there any reason why it wouldnt?

contact support for the motherboard. sounds like a issue with the hotplug detection on headphone and speaker. To be honest when using headphones it is 2.0 only no .1 not 5.1 since there are only 2 speakers (headphone) so it would be downmixed.
also 5.1 audio files would have discrete channels, most mp3 are joint stereo which is not 5.1 encoded.

Im not using the hotplug for the front audio as im using an extnention cable plugged in all the time in the rear and ive told the jack to be a headphone plug so it should turn the 5.1 into 2.0 for the headphones if i set it to headphones otherwise why would they give that option?

I am not 100% sure on this as I've never had a 5.1 system, but I don't see why 5.1 would work with headphones that only have 2 speakers. Most systems are exclusive - you either use headphones or the speakers, not both. So to be honest it sounds like your system is working correctly, unless you are telling your system that the headphones are the left and right speakers of your 5.1 system, which is an incorrect configuration.

On the realtek controller ive got each pair of speakers plugged in and told what to be like front, rear, centre/sub and then headphone extention lead pluged in and thats set to be headphones, so ive told it to be headpones so it should be able to send the 5.1 signal to speakers and then decode the 5.1 track to 2.0 for the headphones aswell
