Typically, the larger the battery the longer it will maintain a given voltage. AA, AAA, C and D cells are 1.5 volts. Since the D cell is markedly larger, it will maintain 1.5 volts for a much longer sustained period than the smaller AAA cell. Thus its widely preferred for D cells in say, flashlights, where you want reliability, and why that digital camera seems to go through AA batteries like water.

Consumer tests have shown that most brands of alkaline batteries are nearly identical in battery life. The difference is when you start getting into things like expensive lithium or rechargables like nickel-hydride.

I think it has something to do with how many cells the battery has inside of it. But other than that, all I know is is identifies the size of the battery.

You didn't understand me. i know how they look, but i was just wondering why are they called that way, does for example D have some meaning behind it (like XL which stands for extra large) or not.

If you followed the link to yahoo answers you would see the name is actually relatively archaic in origin.
