Can you restore windows vista from a recovery partition if...

Can you restore windows vista from a recovery partition if you install windows xp on the laptop, but keep the recovery partition? I will be getting a old laptop to mess with and i am wanting to install windows xp on it... Does anyone know if it will work? Thanks! P.S Can you access the recovery partition through BIOS?
