So, I know that we should be wiping our computers every year or so to keep them fast and to clear out junk. But, I never do this because it's a pain in the ass, and I'm always afraid that I would forget to backup something. Is there any program or something you can suggest that would make this process easier?

I am not going to post this as an aster because to be honest I am not sure if it is right. But I do not believe that there is a program out there could make wiping your computer any easier. You are still going to have to install all of your updates and programs again.

not if he partitions his drive and installs all of his programs and stores his data on the partitioned side :-)

Actually, my computer came with some screwy partition that gave me more space on my D drive than C.

So, I installed a lot of my programs there and my files, etc. So, if I transfer everything over to the D drive except for the operating system, I wouldn't lose anything? Here's the thing though: There's no optical drive; the laptop came with software to format and reinstall, but I'm not sure how it deals with partitions.

If you wipe everything, it will wipe the partitions. It will be a new drive which means no data will be on it.

I'd buy an external hard drive and put all of your files on it before you reinstall your operating system. If you have Windows you can create a system image of Windows with all of your settings, applications, and all the updates. It's a feature built into Windows 7. It's under create a system image under backup and restore.

Just back up your files and slide in a restore disc.

You should do a reinstall. Then when you are finished, install all of your programs and any updates. Then, create an image of the hard drive. Windows 7 has an imaging program built in. In the future, this will be a little easier for you but the first time is still a pain. Here is the process on how to create an image of Windows 7: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/4241/how-to-create-a-system-image-in-windows-7/
