What could be the cause of this? When I press the power button on the front nothing happens for about two minutes, no noise, no lights, nothing.

EDIT: This is from a powered off state.

It's likely the power supply dying. If it's worth your while- try another. Maybe a local shop will let you buy one to test & bring back if that isn't it (or test yours if you bring it in to them)...Pretty straightforward to replace.

is this from a powered on or off state?

If the computer was on:

  • Check that the computer is not frozen. Pressing the button usually just sends the OS a shutdown signal.
  • Press and hold the button for 4 seconds. It should turn off (i.e. cut power; not elegant)

If the computer was off:

  • If it won't void the warranty, open the case and check the power switch header to ensure it has not become disconnected from the motherboard.

Ok, it is from a powered off state, it is an old computer and I have checked the button and that it is connected properly.

Check that:

  • It's plugged in
  • The ATX Power connector is still secure on the motherboard.
  • Nothing else is loose or missing
