According to CNet, probably. Sprint is getting the iPhone and so is T-Mobile. All we need is all the smaller carriers like Metro, Cricket, US Cellular, Virgin to get it and literally every carrier is getting the phone.

I believe so, it's a good idea for apple to spread the iPhone love since lots of people hate AT&T and Verizon (I dislike both but have been using AT&T for some time).

The Unlocked iPhone is currently already compatible with any GSM carrier, although it is much more expensive than the AT&T and Verizon models. See: Unlocked iPhone 4. Any difference would be for Apple to allow new carriers such as Sprint and T-Mobile to subsidize the prices if a contract was purchased, and perhaps allow an unlocked CDMA model.

I don't see Cricket getting the iPhone. They generally have some of the cheapest phones available.

Sprint makes sense in my opinion since they are doing fairly well and are fairly big. But T-Mobile doesn't makes sense since they are getting purchased by AT&T. I don't really expect the smaller carriers to get the iPhone 5 but maybe the iPhone 4S on some of them.
