I recently did a blog post on this and I wanted to know what the community thought. I think it would be smart for Apple to lower their prices because so many people would love to buy a Mac but can't afford one. I know that you pay for the quality but I think it's a little unfair that their quality is still priced in the 80's/90's. Especially for the bottom of the line imacs. For the price of one imac, I could buy a weeks's vacation at the Outer Banks (before the hurricane). So what do you think? Would Apple still be able to make the same computers even though the prices are lower? Make sure to check out my blog on this topic to: [Removed self promotion] |

They are a premium product company, always have been, and hopefully always will be... Call them the B&O of the computer world if you like... |

About the case argument, I did see some laptops with metal cases but they weren't nearly as good as the macbook pro's. And @chadt4 i have no problem if your laptop happened to be made out of sticks and dog sh*t. BMW will not make cheap reasonably priced car, just because they're BMW. Apple will not make lousy plastic squeaking computers for the same reason. At the end you get what you pay for, and the experience of apple products alone justifies the price. I use both Mac and Windows machines and I don't go every where saying windows sucks, because... well, I use both and I like both. Macs are expensive because they are premium products and are supposed to be more expensive. Sure you can get a sports car from Hyundai that could be as good as a BMW in specs and much cheaper. But BMW doesn't care if you did, because BMW is BMW. and Apple is Apple. end of story. And please guys stop the Mac vs. Windows war. They're both just computers after all. |

a pc doesn't come with office anymore so that is 150.00 spent, macs dont need antivirus so that about 30-50.00 less a year, apple warranties are better so no need to have to buy stuff because it isn't "covered", it may cost 300.00 for the os the first time but its only 30.00 to upgrade where as an oem key is 100.00 for windows 7(and you can use that key once and only once so if you dont backup you are not a happy camper) and 200.00 for windows 7 with a retail key(the one you can reuse and abuse if your computer crashes), on top of that but macs only support a little bit of hardware(cpus, gpus, etc.) where as windows supports everything under the sun, meaning that windows is a little buggy with some hardware spec, extremely buggy with others, and not buggy at all with some and that varies depending on the version of the driver. update a driver sometimes i can and sometimes it wont make it better or worse. each os has its flaws and strengths. if you arn't running windows you arn't gaming. but the cost stacks up to be about the same. 2

I hear a lot about Apple coverage, sure if you spend another $150-$300, just about any company will have great service if you spend that much. 1
I'm going to agree with @chadt4 here. PCs don't even need antivirus if you are careful enough and don't go to certain websites. Microsoft Security Essentials is FREE & does the job without hogging system resources. It’s caught stuff my 3rd party anti virus software that I used to use missed. |

Lower price always helps, personally a lot of their base options should start higher, no system should start at 2GB of ram anymore with as cheap as it is. And by removing optical drives they just have costly systems that are far more limited than any PC. (Based on my personal needs) With that said prices could be a bit lower. The iPad appears to be inline with most other tablet pricing, so those are no more expensive than any other companies tablet in the same class overall. However the lack of flash does hurt it and would factor in on me purchasing such a device. Some people do use flash, like some people want blu-ray drives in Macs etc... many people are still using current tech. (Likes that the Touchpad has flash) |

I think they should. Then people like me would be able to afford them. |

No I think the prices are fine. People think macs are expensive but PCs are expensive aswell just think about it. Because if you want to upgrade you Mac to Lion it's a small fee of $30 but if you want to upgrade you PC to Windows 7 it's gonna cost a couple hundred bucks :( 4
But in what you just said, that means that initially you are paying a few hundred for the OS of the Mac. A Macbook Pro that costs $1500 for a PC would cost about $700 or less with similar or even better specs. That means you are paying an $800 premium for the OS and Brand Name. Not worth it. Uh well with a PC you get a cheap plastic case and macs have a better case for another reason. 1
Not true. Lots of cases are made of metal. And Windows is still cheaper considering you can buy a PC for 600 bucks and then buy Windows 7 which would but the entire cost at about $800-$850. 4
ryebread you have the worst argument ever. Sorry but it's true. Lion isn't even a new operating system, it's a service pack, which is why it's cheap. Plus they make a new one every year anyway. The time between the release of Vista and Windows 7 was 4 years, which justifies the price. Also, your argument about cases is completely idiotic, and it's obvious that you're scraping the bottom of the barrel trying to find any reasonable excuse for spending a massive premium on your product. Who cares about the case? Honestly, computers are meant to sit under the desk and do work, and do work well. I don't care if the case is made out of sticks and dog shit as long as it can do what it's designed to do. All this polished shiny aluminum is simply a marketing tactic to entice sheeples and young children like yourself. And if you take a look at the linux community it is anywhere from 6 months to about 2 years with red hat enterprise I believe. Depending on what they are putting into the new release of Linux. ryebread761 - PC's come in metal, or whatever you want. The only reason that Mac's are consistently the same sort of material is because they make the software & the hardware. Whereas Microsoft most of the time only make the software for it, and leave it up to other companies like HP, Dell, Samsung etc. Gives other companies a bit of money too. chadt4 I'm fine with paying the couple hundred bucks however I think you should be able to put the darn thing on two computers! $120 for Windows 7 Home Premium (Ultimate is a complete ripoff BTW) and you can install it on as many computers as you want.
