I'm getting into animation a lot and I have a problem. I'd love to start it but I can't afford it. Everywhere I look it says I should get Maya. I've looked at all variations of Maya on their website and I CAN NOT AFFORD IT! $3,000+ to make animation models?!!?! I understand it's top notch but for someone like me who's just starting out, where do I go? I guess I would be looking for consumer level software. Sort of the "Sony Vegas" of animation. What should I get and where should I look for it?

I would say Blender to CGI is like VLC to Mediaplayback and Gimp to Photoediting - http://www.blender.org/ You can also find lots of free Tutorials

Did i mention its free...

After you learn the basics, you can upgrade your resume by learning maya a bit better. You can download a 30 day free trial from their website. When you do so you can get a one month 25 dollars subscription for lynda.com and do as many tutorials as you can in those 30 days of trial. Even though this wont make you a top notch animator, you will have lots of (legally) obtained knowledge for a 3000$ industry standart animation software, by spending only a couple of bugs on online everywhere accessible courses.

Good Luck!

Blender is a good choice to start off with plus it is free and open source as well. Which we cannot forget. I have it running on both a windows machine and a linux machine as well.

Other goog option is learn Cinema 4D, I found it easier to understand and almost equally powerful as Maya, you can buy the full version with a student license for only 500$, of course it's only for learning purpose and not for comercial use, and you need some kind of Academic Proof.

You can get a copy of Cinema 4D from Maxon.net site but is a little complicated, or try others sites like journeyed.com

Blender is awesome, and if you're a student you can get professional Autodesk software (3Ds Max, Maya) for free!

Blender is great open-source 3D program, it should fit all your needs and besides that it's completely free and money you would spend on buying some other software of that kind you can spend on training courses :)
