I have some books about CSS, HTML, javascript and php, all about 5 years old from when I had more time on my hands to try and learn it, however I was thinking, should I really update them if I want to start learning these languages again? Or can I use the same books?

I agree with @Jackster1337. They are still valid for learning the basics. I have some books that are probably 3-5 years old and I still reference them time to time.

Even if you want to learn HTML5 you need to know the basic HTML.

They are all valid and are fine to work from.

I am a web developer with a lot of sites...and learned on books that were several years old. There are some things you can't use once they're old, but some things you can. I would personally recommend a For Dummies book for a beginner. A lot of people knock them, but I don't know why. An instance of literally judging a book by its cover. Go check out Amazon.com and look for them. I had a lot of success with them before moving on to 'heavier' books.

Very good points, although I think we should focus more on the “now ” then “later” aspects of
