you'll need to download the vmware workstation 8 beta. people have been having problems with win 8 in vmware 7.

There is a problem with VMWARE so the install won't work or barley works. So try Virtual box, virtual pc, or on mac parallels. I have it on parallels and it works great for me.

try here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=769883 it's an example to boot to a win xp partition but it should be the same as booting to a win 8 partition.

Trying to understand the issue.
Do you have 2 drives. I am assuming one is your current boot drive. (win 7, xp...) Second drive you want to setup for windows 8.

Are you wanting to run win 8 in a VM session or win 7?

The VM session or VMWare app will need to be on what ever boot device you are running. The location of the VM file does not matter as long as the location is not moved all the time (vmware does not like this)

Yes I've got one HDD to run Win7 on, then I want to install windows 8 on another HDD so that I can either use it inside a VM, or if I wanted I can simply boot up into Windows 8. KylePolansky below says it's not possible, maybe it's possible with another VM client?

You need to pick one or the other. If you want to run Windows 8 (I'm assuming the developer preview), in a VM, then you can install VMWare on your Windows 7 partition and you will have a Windows 8 virtual machine. If you want Windows 8 to be a 2nd operating system that your computer can boot up into, then you must first create another partition on your hard drive, and then reboot your computer, and install Windows 8 to that partition, from the CD that you have.

Ok so simple - You will need to make 3 installs Drive 1 - Win 7 Drive 2 - Win 8 Drive 1 - Win 8 (vm session)

I really don't see the problem here - This is a common use for Virtual machines in fact the reason they exist.

Let me know if any questions. Derrick

hmm but does the files and settings in the VM client affect the ones on the real boot drive?

No the Virtual machine is a self contained file(s) you need to think of it as a separate machine

So I can't use that install both as a VM and as a boot drive? not at the same time but choosing between them?

no it is a separate app. not a boot partition
