Mail 5.0 and Gmail

I just got my first mac today, and when I went to sync mail 5.0 with my gmail account, I noticed that Mail downloaded all of my 2000 or so message-- I assume that it downloaded my archived messages. Is there anyway to set up mail or gmail to only download emails received from here on out. Also, how would I get all these messages out of mail? Would I just deactivate the mail account and start over? Thanks in advance.

2	You can set it up as IMAP so Mail 5.0 and Gmail servers are in sync. I believe Gmail has a setting for clients to only download new mail. answered Sep 22 '11 at 22:48 bryanminer 851●7●12●24
