Just curious. I am running Windows XP on this particular machine right now. Is your start menu organized?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 with Global Menu. The menu is organised into different categories so that I can find everything easily. Then there's the Places and System tabs.

wow. so that's how an ubuntu looks like. i've been thinking of dual booting it along side windows 7 for geek purposes. but not really sure about it.

(Sep 28 '11 at 14:11) xedric14 xedric14's gravatar image

version 10.10 is quite good, it has LTS (Long Term Support) and it is very stable release. and on the other side Ubuntu 11.04 is not so good, cause it is very unstable ("My software never has bugs, it just develops random features" ) , but it looks better than 10.10. And also you can try "Wubi installer" which allows you to install Ubuntu inside of the Windows OS and when restarting your computer you can select which operating system you want to use. After "tryin' it out" you can uninstall it from control panel in windows just like any other program.

(Sep 28 '11 at 19:27) Ivan Tomica Ivan%20Tomica's gravatar image

you mean, with Wubi installer, I can have Ubuntu just like I have firefox? and have no problem at all? see, i'm not the only one using this PC, and my mother might freak out when she Opens it and see an Ubuntu OS rather than Win7 (where I taught her how to use the PC)

(Sep 29 '11 at 02:02) xedric14 xedric14's gravatar image

and what do you mean by "stable"? bugs? how much of them? and does doing the method you suggest take a lot of resources? I only have a mid-range laptop (maybe low-range already since i'ts a 2010 model)

core2duo 2.0ghz, 2gb ram, 256mb Ati Radeon 4330 HD mobility 250gb hdd.

yes just like firefox but you can't run it just like firefox , instead of that you need to restart your pc and boot menu will apear , in that menu just select ubuntu and voila... and when you want to remove ubuntu, just boot in windows again and control panel > programs and features , and you just uninstall it from there. And jes it would run it, Ubuntu takes about 300MB if RAM. try it, you don't have nothing to lose...

(Sep 29 '11 at 04:50) Ivan Tomica Ivan%20Tomica's gravatar image

cool. I mean, since it's in the boot option when I boot Ubuntu does it boot windows? or Windows was "used" by Ubuntu to install it? and apart from that, nothing more? like resource consumption? (sorry guys, i'm off topic) anyways looks like i'll be using Ubuntu sooner than I thought.

(and by that method you mean, I wouldn't have to format a drive to install it? so what's gonna cost me is just the Hard Drive Space right? thanks Ivan.

Windows was used for install it , it is like installing it "side by side". When you boot ubuntu it boots only ubuntu... windows is used just for installing it and uninstalling it without messing with your partitions and data, cause if you would install Ubuntu "for real" you would have to format primary partition to ext4 format, and windows uses ntfs

wth man, why not 7? not judging., but why not 7? it's as stable as XP. i;m asking not cause I despise XP, but I wonder what reasons do XP users have for keeping XP when 7 is like XP too., only much CUTEr haha

(Oct 01 '11 at 01:53) xedric14 xedric14's gravatar image

I like 7, but it crashes constantly and uses up my RAM, while XP is lightweight and my desktop is made for Vista so I left it, as is.

People keep XP to maintain more compatibility and still have some of the features that were pointlessly changed or removed in Vista/7.

I like the classic start menu, it allows you to simply hover over items to see their contents and lays everything out in front of you (filling the screen if you have lots of programs (but it is organized)

this allows you to simply move your mouse over to the item instead of having to scroll through a list where you may only see 10 items at a time, then have to left click on the item then double click on the content you want to load.

And when you get more of a feel with the classic start menu, you can reduce the delay times (for me I can open almost any program in the start menu in much less than 1 second (have the delay at 50ms)

well, there's mine. it's a windows 7 x 64 SP1 machine.

every start menu shall fit its user, I believe. and mine is just half of what I actually Use to access my programs.

the other is accessed by Object Dock Plus 2.

and some Shortcuts are accessed by Scrybe. (yes, it's a laptop)

I seldom use the Start Menu, but I designed it that way, so that when a friend uses my computer, I wouldn't have to teach him how to use this machine. but for me., Start Menu can completely go away (well, except for the programs masterlist) PS: the antivirus softwares in it are ways to tell anyone using it how secure this PC is. :)

*cheers

before 2008, windows is yes, not secure. ever since MSSE is released, it's secure. and I'm not starting an argument, just saying that everybody who has MSSE that's updated do not in 99% of a chance Experience Security Problems. that's based on what my experience tells me, and what people around me experience too. guess you're just one of the anti-MS fanboy around. don't care.

That's pretty similar to what my old desktop used to look like. Trying to get my programs and start menu back to that way.

and maybe you don't notice. there is no single Icon on my desktop. (well except for the Recycle bin sometimes when I don't turn the icons off.)

its because I use the desktop as my Temporary Space where I place everything i am working at the moment, and then I keep them later to their respective folders where I can find them like a book.

I don't believe desktops should be a place for shortcut Icons. that's why my Shortcuts are either on start menu, object dock, or Scrybe.

Visual studio... mmmmm :D and what is that program pinned next to opera? and one more thing. YOU USE OPERAAA?? WTH?

(Sep 28 '11 at 20:56) Ivan Tomica Ivan%20Tomica's gravatar image

The program next to Opera is Microsoft WebMatrix, as I do a lot of web development... And yes, I do use the fastest, most customizable browser on the planet :)

That is what you think, when i develop sites i always must to adjust it for IE and Opera... pain in the... :)

When I develop sites the only problems I ever have are Firefox and IE...

(Sep 30 '11 at 15:52) Zane Harnish Zane%20Harnish's gravatar image

Opera is fast since it uses a proxy to compress the website and deliver it to you in a smaller size. at least that's what ive read about it.

it's fast enough and customizable as firefox too. again and again like Chris pirillo have said, what's good for you may not be good for others.

like I myself Uses Firefox most of the time not because I'm a fanboy, but because of my network constraints., Firefox is the most reliable.

when on different Computer/Network connection I sometimes try Chrome and Opera, But I'm kinda used to Firefox which makes it harder for me to switch no matter how much Promotion I read from geeks like people here in lockergnome. and to be fair. When I first bought this laptop, I kept on switching between browsers to see which one fits me.

so again, Chris is right, what's good for you may not be good for others.

PS: it applies on skin and hair products too. lol

Yup... I agree... The truth is, when people ask me what browser they should use, I often recommend Chrome because it is simple. The reasons I like Opera are things that most people will never use anyway...

And Opera does have an option to turn on that compresses the sites, but I don't use it.

The main thing I love about Opera though is that it is basically 100% customizable. It has a palette of hundreds of buttons and items that I can drag around and put them where ever I want. Maybe I'm mistaken, but I don't think that there is any other browser out there that let's you freely move any component of the browser...

(Oct 01 '11 at 07:16) Zane Harnish Zane%20Harnish's gravatar image

I personally like opera because of that, i want from my browser to be simple and lightweight. When i used opera it sometimes climbed up to 1GB of RAM usage, and with Chrome i didn't have that problems no matter how much tabs i had opened.

Also, I cleaned up my desktop right after taking this screenshot. :P
