Would you work somewhere for free - just to gain experience? Some people think you should ALWAYS be paid:

Do you have the guts to be an intern?

I done it at a local PC repair shop last year for 6 months no pay but it was great experience and will with a little luck help me one of the jobs I just applied for.

I had experience in both types on internships, and I can't say I prefer one over the other. Fortunately both were in places I liked so, while getting paid was definitely a plus point, it wasn't a decisive factor. I guess it just boils down to how much you want to do the work in question and how much you want money. In my opinion, learning the trade is also a form of payment and it has helped me more than any internship stipend even could. I believe I now run my company only because I had experience in the field due to the internships.
