I had experience in both types on internships, and I can't say I prefer one over the other. Fortunately both were in places I liked so, while getting paid was definitely a plus point, it wasn't a decisive factor. I guess it just boils down to how much you want to do the work in question and how much you want money. In my opinion, learning the trade is also a form of payment and it has helped me more than any internship stipend even could. I believe I now run my company only because I had experience in the field due to the internships.
