I tryed syncing a friends iphone 4 with snow leopard and it wouldnt recoqnise the device (no idea why) so will I need to upgrade to lion when I buy my iPhone 4s?

Currently have no need to upgrade to lion since I only use my mac for simple browsing and music use

It will run on Leopard, because all you need is the latest version of iTunes (if you choose to have iTunes...you can do it without a computer).

But, to answer your question directly, since you're going to be syncing data, I believe the latest version of iTunes is required.
