a lot of people might disagree but i used spyware doctor and i loved it. it worked very well for me. it does cost though. so for free of course i would use AVG. its free and works very well. |

Depends on what you define as "healthy", but a few good practices will help. Removing unecessary applications from the startup can help, though it can be done often with the default tool MSConfig. Are 3rd party ones such as Autoruns by Sysinternals but I think its overkill and too easy to screw things up with. Defragmenting depending on the usage of the computer could help, with more frequent writing/modifiying of substantial numbers of or large files prompting a need to do it more often. Windows having a tool built it, but I use Defraggler. Many other options too. |
All of the softwares I mentioned can be downloaded free and directly from www.filehippo.com If there's one not-free Software I'm using, its TuneUpUtilities. I trust it w/ my registry and Makes my Windows really fast. people here say it's kinda costly. but I think it's worth it. because it's all in one. I'd only have to run 1 process (8mb) of RAM to do the maintenance tasks rather than Run several number of Process to do the same which may significantly slow the system. so there: that's my laptop. *The reason why I use Tune Up Utilities for my registry is 1. I can review the changes it WILL make BEFORE it "fixes' the registry. check and uncheck boxes to choose whether to change that part or not. this gives me enough control to say that I AM myself doing the registry cleaning. (though most of the time, I just let Tune Up decide since I already trust it, but if you don't., then you can always review before changing. 2.it's easy to UNDO the changes with a complete Log on what and when it Did it. so yah, TuneUp does the Job but I review it first. so what it does is only show me what keys to change/delete you can also search lockergnome itself if you want a list of good programs, i think i've seen something like that. :) |
