Hello everyone! I just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on my machine, and I noticed that there are 2 driver installations for my graphics card. I tried installing this set before but it failed. The other set of drivers installed just fine. I was wondering if I should install these after the other ones and if it is recommended. I have experienced lag with simple tasks but the Dash has improved significantly with the new drivers compared to before. |

Ok this is to all the people having problems with Ubuntu 11.10 and ATI drivers. If you installed the proprietary drivers and you experience choppy workflow, I recommend downloading CCSM and changing a few things. First thing to change is Sync to Vblank, so you would open up the OpenGL, and uncheck Sync to Vblank. Next back out to the main menu and go to composite tab, then uncheck detect refresh rate. For some people, this works, for others, it doesn't do anything. If you are one of those people that had Ubuntu working better before you installed the drivers, try removing the drivers from the same screen that you installed them from. If you don't know what that is, that would be the Additional Drivers application. Remove them to revert back to the Open Source Drivers. The best solution that works 100% of the time is just to revert to Unity 2D mode. Unity 2D is by far the best option, and you get most if not all of the functionality of the normal Unity mode, just without the extra flare. I hope these things help anyone with the problem. I am currently running Unity 2D as I do not need the bling of the normal Unity interface, and 2D is by far much more stable than normal Unity IMHO. In the same boat with Ubuntu 11.10 32bit and 64bit and Kubuntu 32bit and 64bit Yeah I also asked on the Askubuntu.com site. They are helping me a bit there. Will update this post when its been fixed. |
