I use Cleanup programs like: ccleaner, tuneup utilities... to keep my computer as fast as possible, i recommend buying some software for this, as not all free programs can keep your computer healthy.

I believe there is no answer to this question, because the speed of a computer isn't well defined until you start mentioning components (not to mention tasks).

Exactly. A good analogy is if you want your sports car to be fast, would you drive it around with a bunch of boxes and other miscellaneous stuff in the trunk/back seat/etc. or would you clean it up so you weren't hauling around excess junk? You'd do the latter. Computers work surprisingly the same way.

There is no secret. Simple common sense:

  • Start with decent hardware. No more than 2-5 years old.
  • Don't install crap you don't need. Like ccleaner and other "speed up" utilities, which in fact only make things worse.
  • Remove everything that came with the computer. Preferrably, format and start over.
  • Disable features you don't use.

CCleaner does speed up your pc if you dont want to go into the registry and clean up your startup

Or you could just do basic common-sense maintenance and avoid getting your registry all gunked up in the first place. Works either way.

The secret to a fast computer is money. On a serious note, the secret is keep it free of malware/spyware, only keep programs you need installed, and disable services that are not being used.

Don't use applications like CCleaner, because if you try to "clean" your registry, you will leave gaps in it. I recommend staying away from everything that messes with your registry, because it will only make it slower.

Sometimes your computer may not be that slow at all. If you are still using Internet Explorer, than you are missing out on a lot.

Clean your hard drive. Backup your old files onto a CD or something. Make sure you empty your recycle bin, cache, cookies, and history. You could use the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup. If you want to clean more, you could use CCleaner. Also defragment your hard drive, and do a CHKDSK every once in a while.

Stay away from registry cleaners, unless you really know what you are doing. Registry defragmenters could be good.

I recommend you have at least 1GB of ram, and clean the inside of your computer out every year.
