My brother has a Dell Laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate installed. The Windows 7 he got as an upgrade disk to the Vista edition that had been pre-installed when he bought it. So how can I do a clean format of the HDD and then put Windows 7 back on it? I'm thinking the following process might work:
Will this work and it it OK or do I have to purchase a whole other copy of Win 7 just to clean the HDD? I'm asking this because I am a mac user and have little experience with the terms and conditions of windows operating systems. |

I had an old Dell laptop and I was able to just put in my Windows 7 DVD and used the product key that came with the DVD. I was able to install the operating system, overwrite everything and do all that all inside the installation interface. I'd boot up into the Windows 7 installation DVD and see what options you have, I'm guessing there is a way to do a complete reinstall right from inside the DVD. |

I'm guessing if it's a restore disk that came with the computer, then Windows 7 should install the same way when you just took it out of the box. It's something that I am assuming. I am a Mac user myself, but that's what I did with my HP desktop, so it should work on your brother's Dell. |

This is my youtube video but its not spam i swear ha. i figured out how to install an upgrade version of vista or 7 on a blank hard drive without having to really upgrade from xp. i did it on my mac for dual boot and i also did if for windows 7 on an hp laptop i sold last summer because i wiped the hard drive before i sold it.
and no you don't have to buy a new windows 7 version. its registered to that MAC address so it'll work fine. if your formatting to sell though i would recommend drive scrubber. its cheap and works extremely well.
