I know I can ping an Android device from a computer, but is it possible to ping from my Android smartphone? And how do you do this if it is possible?

You can use apps to ping to places. Apps like https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mm.network&hl=en is an example

You can also use terminal on android and command a ping like usual

How do you get to the terminal on android? Do I have to root my device to be able to do it?

I often need to connect to my server from my tablet (running Froyo) so I generally use Irssi ConnectBot, I've also used it to ping websites before.

If you want more functionality - I would go for Irssi Connectbot.

The easiest way to ping a host is to use an app.

Check the Play Store.

My favorite is Ping!Up 2.0: Fatoen.de
