Is 4GB of RAM enough in a MacBook Pro?

More memory will be needed if you plan to edit 1080p video

While it can work on 4GB, that only applies if it is the only program you are running.

(compare the cost of adding more before ordering, to the cost of heading to a site like newegg and buying extra memory)

apple charges $200 to go from 4GB to 8GB while newegg charges around $40-50 to buy 8GB

If you're doing a lot of editing as well as virtual machines, 8GB shouldould make things run more smoothly and allow you to multitask better. I suggest buying aftermarket RAM, though, since it's MUCH cheaper.

i would recommend getting more ram. video editing and virtual machines can use a lot of ram. especially HD video editing. then depending on what you run on the virtual machine you'll need a to too. because most virtual machines you allocate how much RAM you want to give them when you set up the machine. so if you want your virtual machine to have 2 gigs of ram that only leaves 2 for the main os. upgrading to 6 will help a lot but ideally you want as much as possible. you can probably get 2 4 gig cards for like 100. my school sells them for 50 a piece so I'm sure you can find a deal.

4 gigs of ram on either a PC or a mac. Should be fine if your just doing stuff like internet, word processing, spreadsheets, maybe some some gaming if it is not too intensive, maybe listen or watch video. 8 gigs if your planning to do some video editing or into doing some compilations of some sort where your making a program of some sort. And have a need to swap a lot of files into memory or to the hard drive. Amazingly enough the only time that I have seen computers in general requiring larges amounts of ram were in Servers themselves where they are doing multiple things at the same time. Like web servers, SMTP servers and a few others where memory is at a demand for it. There are some apps that require a minimum of 4-8 gigs of ram. But are either games with high resolution that look like cinema quality.

i use hp notebook which has 4 gigs of ddr3 memory, been using it since last year, my experience has been great, its great both in terms of power + package, never really needed much, ddr3 memory is good, i do lot of web surfing + 3d modelling and things just works fine for me, my windows 7 machine never crashed on me, infact most stable notebooks i ve ever used!

More is always going to be better. Go add some more :D

Also it being a Mac Book Pro are you able to open it to change out the memory for more or larger dims?

So if a 15in MacBook Pro baseline model comes with 4GB of RAM then whats wrong with this picture? Using photoshop with a mac running OS X Mountain Lion would not be ideal, if you only have 4GB of RAM. The OS itself takes up about 2GB of RAM. If you are thinking of getting a MacBook Pro that will be running OS X Mountain Lion then get one with 8GB of RAM or upgrade your MacBook from 4GB to 8GB yourself. This is my recommendation based on my experience. Look at your Activity Monitor and see how much free space you have in your RAM usage. Currently my used RAM space is at 5.08GB, well beyond 4GB and I don't have too many programs in use. My MacBook Pro runs much better on 8GB.

If you do that, you'll definitely need at least 8 Gigs of RAM since Mac OS X uses at least 2 GB. When using Final Cut Pro X the more RAM you have the better the App will work. Using Virtual machines will also work better with the more RAM you have
