I am looking to have 3 external monitors coming off my laptop to extend my display, however I've run into a couple of things that have me confused..

  • I've got a Compaq Presario CQ42 laptop running 8GB of RAM.
  • The three monitors are eMachines E190HQV 18.5"
  • I'm looking to do this by using this splitter.

Will this work and if not, how can I make it happen?

that will not work, using a spliter will only mirror 1 screen, it will be 3 copy's of the same screen, you need 3 separate outputs on the laptop to use 3 extended desktops so you can use each monitor as a separate screen.

Can anyone back this guy up?

Yes, this is the way it will work, even though you have a splitter, it will just repeat the signal from the output to all three screens.

Ya he is right. You are using a splitter so you are splitting the one signal that is coming out of your computer. If you want for monitors then try the suggestion below by @Billy Aoki

You'll need something like this to make it work, if I'm not wrong.

Is there any cheaper way to do this guys? I really don't have $300 extra to spend.

Yes, you will need some new graphics card. Some laptops have 2 video outputs with the use of a dock, but I don't think I've seen any with 3.
