I was watching the TLDR episode this morning about how to enable the new YouTube theme, and Chris mentioned how it was not Cosmic Panda, but rather the new theme altogether. My question is, What was the point of Cosmic Panda altogether if they were not going to use the theme in the new version of YouTube. Any thoughts and opinions are welcome.

I think it was a beta to see if people liked it.

Google usually has products in Beta for a very long time. My guess is that either users or other people at Google just didn't like it enough to go public. I personally love the style of it, but there are a couple of bugs that still haven't been fixed.
