Microphone Headset Problem! help

Well my headset (with microphone built in) got plugged in today... I hear a strange static-like frequency. At first I thought is was too much microphone feedback... I turned it all the way down and the problem still occurs. What do I do? Don't just tell me what to do.. Please give me step-by-step instructions... Thanks. ;-) Hope you can help.
