If PS3 software backup is not an option, can I just copy everything to a new PS3 drive and everything would work?

So my PS3 got the yellow light of death. Twice. The first time I got it repaired, and it's dead right now again and it's going to be a while before I can repair it again but I want a working PS3 and I don't think this one is worth keeping anymore, so I'll buy a new one. But here's what I'm asking: Do I have to use the PS3 backup option for everything to work on a new PS3 hard drive? This will mean I have to get my dead one repaired or put the old hard drive into the new PS3 so I can do this OR does it still work if I just transfer everything over to a new PS3 hard drive through my computer?
