Why does aol/aim keep disabeling older versions

I find that with aim once we are comfortable with certain versions of the messenger they then force you to update to the latest version or else you cant even use the messenger at all. Although there are sites that have older versions available you cant even use the version you like. Why does aol/aim do this. Is there a way to force aim to work on any version without getting the message we no longer support this version please download the latest version or install the latest version.
