Hey guys, whats up. Basically I have a huge piece of crap router. it is the DIR-601 WIRELESS N 150 HOME ROUTER, and to be frank, it sucks. The internet speeds I get are depressing. I want to upgrade to a router with gigabit ports, but in order to utilize the high speed that this router would put out, would I need a special modem? the Modem I got is from comcast, I googled its model name which is:"arris tm502g" and from what I read it apparently puts out only 42 mbps? I dont know, im confused. I would also need cat 6 ethernet too correct? which isnt a problem as it is pretty cheap. Anyways What do I need to do to get that 450 mbps, I have the right internet plan. I would like to keep the price of the router around $80( I dont mind buying used) and the modem around that price as well. |

NOTE: that speed is the top speed inside the network, not actual internet bandwidth. That speed is usually for network drives or throwing videos around the network. The only slowness is your internet speed. If you want faster internet speed, you need a faster connection It is just like imaging water flowing from one big pipe to a smaller pipe. It will not flow as fast since of the smaller pipe (in this case the internet) |

No, the 450Mbps is just the speed of the wireless network, you can still use the same modem and other network hardware. |

Correct, in that the stated speed of 450mbs is only for the wireless network communication and several times faster than the incoming internet access. If you intend to transfer large files or stream between devices on your network then go for the best speed you can afford and that is supported by your hardware, otherwise since the internet access will only be a fraction of it then you can go for something cheaper. |
