What is the most popular Linux distribution? I thought it was Ubuntu but correct me if I'm wrong. Which ones are fading out and coming to be? Thanks ;) Have a nice day.

Most popular is definitely Ubuntu... but remember most popular is not necessarily the best. I think the great ones that everyone should try are Ubuntu, LinuxMint, and Fedora... those are all my favorite distros. Also, for a good very light weight distro... I suggest either Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux. Most distros have different versions with different DEs, however if the distro you want doesn't come with the DE you want, you can install it. good luck with Linux, and have fun! Hope you enjoy it!

Where would you rank Sabayon? I don't know if I would call it my favorite, but it is in my top three.

To be honest I've never tried sabayon. I might load it into a VM soon.

Take a look at http://www.distrowatch.com it is the top 100's of the 350+ distros available for Linux themselves. There is no real preference to the top one and only distro that everyone will like. There are some that people in general who are using linux will like one over the other. Due to preference. Mine happens to be Ubuntu with the gnome interface on it. Others will like XFCE, KDE or what ever the GUI it's using for that Distribution. I've even tried Open Solaris as well since it was from Sun Microsystens originally until Oracle bought Sun Microsystemns out a few years ago. Mind you Open Solaris or Solaris in General it really rock solid for server side of things and not for the typical end user experience on a typical desktop/workstation.

XFCE and KDE are indeed both DEs, not Distributions. The DE can also be changed fairly easily from distro to distro.

Sorry for the confusion there. I meant as a Gui interface since you can have either one of the three in Ubuntu.

Yes, DE - Desktop Environments... in other words GUI. also... On my Ubuntu Machine, I can actually switch between Unity, Gnome-Shell, Gnome2, XFCE, and LXDE... I typically use Unity, except when running something a little heavier... In which case I'll use XFCE of LXDE.

Currently the most popular distro is Ubuntu. Or that would be the "general knowledge" that is. I would say Linux Mint just might be now. Or if it isn't, shortly it will be so.
