most people don't need them if you do a lot of video and pictures you may need it like if you make as much videos as Chris Pirillo you would need it

1Tb = 128GB.

1TB, however, = 1024GB. Get it right, people!

I would but only one. Currently use around 300gbs and that is with very little downloads. Mostly software/games and some music. No pictures or videos other than iMovie projects.

Yeah we need them I have over 500 Gbs only in anime series(high quality) and its growing, + all the software, music!

Although I put pictures and University documents in, megaupload Deviantart, pen drives. It's better organized that way :P

My personal home server has about 600gb on it and it's still got about 50GB left on it. Plenty.

The most common people who need a lot of space are:

  • Youtubers/Video editor people such as Chris Pirillo
  • Home theatre pcs to store high quality video files and thus high size / people who buy and download their films from legit paid for services.
  • A family home server - 1 person might not need all the space, but 4 other people might.
  • Gamers - Quality = quantity so a lot of games will each up the space
  • Photographers - Raw, original digital images on high quality cameras take up lots of space times this by hundreds.
  • A music boffin - who has collected the whole of music from the beginning of time

People Who can live with 160gb:

  • Small Web server / File Server
  • People who browse the web or have a few family snaps from a mid range camera or phone
  • Students - school, college and most university students dealing with documents
  • Programmer / Web Developer.

So no, not everyone needs 1 - 2TB of storage space, but it's available for the people who do.

I prefer to have a few small drives because that way if one does fail then you don't loose the whole shebang(although you will have backed up. Won't you). Hard drive technology is being updated so if you have 1TB and never fill it while the rest of the world has gone fully SSD then the purchase was pointless.

That's why I sometimes get mad at prices. Right about now it's cheaper to buy a 500GB hard drive than it is to buy a 160GB. You might only need the 160, but it's better value to get the bigger one.

But this question is like asking 'I only used a single core 2ghz athlon xp 2600 and it works fine. Why would I ever need a 6 core phenom 2' The answer is the same. Some people do.

I guess it depends on the person, and the person's personality. If someone is a video editor that deals with high definition videos, you need a lot of space. Or you could get a person who thinks he needs the most space.

As others have said, Photographers who take pictures in extremely high resolutions need them.

Also, As hard drive capacity increases, So will media that require terabyte’s of storage.

I remember a similar question from naysayer’s when just a gigabyte was considered “massive” & “unneeded”.

When multi terabyte drives become the norm, The naysayer’s will moan & groan about how the next up & coming high capacity drives are “unneeded”.

Drive capacity will continuously increase as the need for higher capacity drives continuously increases. It’s a never ending cycle.

YES. I play games, do 3D art, have a lot of apps, and generally do a lot of stuff. I have a 500GB hard drive in my desktop, a 250GB drive in my laptop, and a 500GB external drive. They are all pretty solidly filled up, but I .zip my stuff so that it doesn't bug me. It's not really a problem, but I plan to move to a RAID array of high-capacity drives in my desktop. RAID 0 FTW!
