i have tried multiple good restoration programs on windows; it sees the file, restores it but when i open it its all random gibberish characters?! also some time ago i tried restoring a bookmarks.html file and it was also corrupted in the same way. why does this always happen? |

When you delete a file in the OS you delete the location of the file in the filesystem of the HDD. Which means you don't actually delete the file, you delete a shortcut to the file thus some programs can find the file and restore it again. However because the cluster is now marked as empty in the filesystem, when writing a new file the filesystem will search for empty clusters and arrange the magnetic stapels to read new information and add it to the file system. If that happens the file or parts of it will be gone forever. That's what security programs do when they securely erase a file. They erase it, then write random numbers to every empty cluster and deletes them again. Therefore you can't access it. Because one file can be scattered all over the HDD, only parts of the file will be overwritten, therefore the program can find the file and restore parts of it, but not enough to make it useable. |

There are many different applications that claim to do full system recoveries to one simple file. I have used a couple in the past, some are free to try, will show files that it can recover but will charge a one time lic fee, some are 100% free.
I recommend reading reviews, researching, and taking plenty of time when deciding on a product like this. Any product which you will pay money on it is best to try to get the most for the dollar and to make sure it will do what you need it to! |
