One of the more popular free screen recorders is CamStudio. It has a really simple interface but kind of lacks in features. But if all you need is something to record your screen without any editing capabilities, this will work nicely. http://camstudio.org

I have had load of screen recording software, but the best I have come across so far is Bandicam - http://download.cnet.com/Bandicam/3000-13633_4-75332824.html
I use it for Minecraft and its really high quality and hardly any lag. Hope this helped.
