I know we live in a world where smartphones dominate. But the price of the entire 3G/4G service is way too expensive, including a family of 5 all on a plan. So we stuck with basic phones, to which I just upgraded to an LG Cosmos 2 on Verizon a few days ago. It's amazing how few basic phones are left off the market. Will we ever see a time where basic phones will be officially gone or will we forever see at least something for those not technologically advanced or for those who cannot afford or do not want to pay the high smartphone services? |

But to answer your question of why.. Phone companies are just trying to keep up to date, and the "Non 3/4G Phones" are just obsolete and maybe not being made in production anymore so they just stopped selling them as much (Supply and demand) |

There are still some basic phones out there, for example; straight talk, Virgin Mobile, ect. But in the AT&T store that I go to to pay my bill, There are regular old flip phones, and phones with Full QWERTY keyboards (That are not really smart, but good for texting).. You can also get a cell phone from Ebay and put your Sim Card in it (assuming your carrier supports sim card) and just get a plan without the internet. |

Well... the public sees so much that you can do so much more and everyone want "in" on the "action". People see how much potential those smartphones have and see that they provide greater entertainment. Dataplans do not really see that expensive to me. I just pay mine. |

Basic phones are generally low powered and don't have all the connectivity features. |

I don't know about you guys, but over here in Singapore, all those basic phones without any 3G or smartphone capabilities are no longer offered(in general) here. If you want to get one of them cheap basic phones, you'd have to head down to somewhere like 7-11 where they sell those phones for as cheap as 30 bucks without any subscriptions. Though I really don't see any reason for anyone to get these cheapy phones unless I can't afford a smartphone(impossible), or I need a phone that can last me for 2 weeks on a single charge with moderate usage. Yes, these cheapy phones have somewhat miraculous battery lives. Personally, I have an Xperia Play as my main phone without any data plan as I mostly use it on wifi. Also, a mifi device with a subscription of 2mbps(50GB/month) for 20 bucks a month. |
