First of all I would like to say it's good to be back on Lockergnome.net. I've been away for a while, too long for my liking but I've been busy at university.

Anyway I'm in my first year at university and soon I will be getting a bursary, which is meant to be spent on something that benefit your education whilst at the university. I do music technology and Pro Tools is a big part of the course and it would be good to have my own version so I can work when ever I want. However I've only got a notebook PC at the moment which can't really run something like Pro Tools so I'm thinking about buying a new PC or Mac to use as my main machine with Pro Tools.

The bursary is £500, but I will also have some extra money from Christmas and my birthday.Since I have to buy Pro Tools as well I can't afford a top spec PC/Mac, but I could probably stretch to an iMac. Since I'm at University I do get an educational discount from the Apple store so I was leaning towards getting a Mac since it will be the cheapest I ever get a new one. I don't normally like asking questions like this but I would like some advice. What would be best as a main machine (as a power user) and for running Pro Tools and other DAWs.

Well, either will work, it just depends on your preference, but I just found Macs to be easier all around. Pro Tools generally is very particular about whatever components your PC is built with and thus certain configurations just won't work(Pro Tools either won't function correctly, or in some cases, at all). They do have a long list of what system components are and aren't compatible on the Avid site. On the other hand, Pro Tools is already optimized to work with all Mac models. So there's no guess work there at all. I've ran Pro tools on both and also found Pro Tools worked better on my Mac. I have an '07 iMac and it works great, so even a new Mac Mini will run it perfectly fine if you go the Mac route.
