Is there a way to show the date in the menu bar without showing the month.

If you go to Sys. Prefs. under Date & Time you can check the box "Show date" this adds both the month and date to the menu bar. The month doesn't change often, so I don't need it there. The date is convenient.

What's the point? It takes up an extra few millimeters of screen

Well depending on what kind of system they have and what they have installed, that extra few millimeters of screen become precious. ie. Macbook Air 11"

Yes to me those few millimeters are precious. I have a 1280x800 display on my MBP 13 and have battery, wifi, time machine, icloud, logmein and dropbox in the menu bar. I don't need to know its January so I'd like to save space.
