Actual stores like Best Buy will be gone. They won't be able to compete with the prices that Amazon will be able to offer.

Not just amazon, any online store...

Best Buy is already useless, cables? No, ten to twenty times too much, movies? nope, everything is too expensive.

I like real stores. You can walk in and out in 20 minutes with a new gadget, instead of waiting days for shipping. Plus you can actually see and touch what you're buying before you buy it, and pay in cash instead of using a credit card.

Believe me, I enjoy going to the stores to look at the item I want to purchase to see if it works the way I want it to. I don't want stores like Best Buy to vanish, but it seems to be a trend. If Best Buy weren't here, I probably wouldn't be typing on my new Lenovo IdeaPad V570 that I just bought yesterday.

I agree that Best Buy probably won't be here in 20 years, but there will always be something.

Depend on cost, if the prices are the same I would pick it up locally, not going to spend much extra to do it.

Netbooks, i cant see them being around for more than 2-3 years from now.

Lithium Ion Battery, Lithium is getting quite rare and is hard to find and process, they will likely die out in favor of something better. something that will hold a lot more charge for a smaller area/volume for smaller mobile devices.

CD/DVD drives and discs, these will probably be gone in a few years, or start to become scarce.

Blu-ray, it wont be around for 20 years.

Cold Cathode type back-light monitors, these will be gone in favor of LED's.

3G for mobile devices, this will be gone in favor of 4G and more advanced technologies that are much faster.

Refrigerators, not all will be gone but the kinds we have today will be, this is because of the kinds of gasses they use in the compressors, with the older ones they used a gas that damaged the ozone layer, so now are being made with gases like Helium, which is becoming very scarce and hard to extract (it's extracted from rocks underground), even though it's one of the most abundant gases in the universe.

4G will probably be ancient.

Well considering that in 1992, internet on everyones cellphones was unheard of, let alone internet being unheard of. I'd say there will be atleast 6 or 7 new mobile network technologies before 2032

I'd say USB thumb drives. We're moving more towards the cloud so I believe it would be non-existent in the next 20 years.

I am not sure of it.

(Jan 25 '12 at 11:09) Yogi Yogi's gravatar image

Not for me, the cloud is not a convenient way to move around several GBs of information to another device. Uses bandwidth and is far too slow for such uses plus is dependent on the internet.

I'm taking video production at my high school and i can tell you that flash-drive-like devices will never go, atleast not all the way

(Jan 26 '12 at 19:55) bayareacat bayareacat's gravatar image

Ok, I agree with all of you guys in the sense too many files takes up bandwidth, not everyone has Verizon FiOS, or Wideband to upload files. I do use my Dropbox often, but I can't put a 350MB file without it trying to upload for a good 20-30 mins. I do own jump drives, several actually. Cloud is convenient sure, but yes, I agree it won't go away that fast.

I can see that as even the most boring cell phones will be cheap smart phones.

Most physical media will be gone, the concept of having anything stored on a computer will be gone for most people.

Where else would you store thousands of GBs of data?

(Jan 25 '12 at 20:52) Xiro Xiro's gravatar image

on cloud servers that companies will provide. for the few that really need to store 1000s of GBs, they'll use their own drives tho

(Jan 26 '12 at 19:58) bayareacat bayareacat's gravatar image

Maybe, just maybe we would get some decent upload speeds, but you know internet companies. They're trying to get you to use their business servers, which is more expensive but has a better upload rate.

There will always be raminents about of all tech, goodness I still have a manuel typewriter, which I fall back on when the power goes out, and I have lanterns (kero) as well, there will always come a time when a lot of the old tech stuff will come in handy, I have used the lanterns and the typewriter twice in the last twelve months, depends on how much bad weather we get in Oz, parts of Queensland and upper New South Wales are under water now and it's still raining here, a mate said it was good weather for ducks, but even the ducks are gunna need a boat soon
