Extra cooler on top of CPU cooler?

Hey.

Right now i'm running my AMD Phenom II x4, with a stock cooler. I would like some extra cooling, and i actually have an extra 70mm lying around. So i was wondering if it would be a good idea to glue the 70mm fan onto the stock cooler? (The stock cooler is also 70mm.)

Hope you guys can help, if you want, i can share my numbers with you guys later, if i decide to do it. Thanks in advance!

Performance will be increased however only slightly. The problems with stock coolers is the actual heatsink, not the fan itself. A heatsink big enough to fully utilize a 120mm fan instead of the standard 80mm fan is much more efficient. Also you need to think about fin density and the likes. I wouldn't mount the extra fan directly on top of the original fan, I'd rather point the fan at an angle towards the CPU cooler so it blows air on and around the components of the CPU socket. I did that once and achieved much better results, especially if you have a tight case and/or a lot of RAM modules blocking the left blowout on the heatsink.

Well, i already have 2 120's and a 140 in the case, and there are no room for a 70mm fan.

midi-tower I suppose.. I don't think you can gain much performance then. However if you buy a more advanced cooler you can probably use the extra fan for more airflow. The bigger the heatsink the more the airflow become a limiting factor.
