I'm not too familiar with web hosting, but I would like to just have a little website/blog for myself and use Wordpress to get that done. It's just that I do not want to pay for anything. So I figured, maybe there is a webhosting site where everything is free and where I might also get a free database to put Wordpress on. Anyone any ideas?

Why not use wordpress on their two sides. wordpress.org or wordpress.com. You can use either one of those which are free directly from them. Plis the files needed to run wordpress itself like the php files are updated by them automatically. I have my own blog with them there. Unless you have a spare computer around running windows XP for example you could always use that with IIS on it, PHP, and Mysql to make your own site on a computer at home. And go that route with it. The only thing you would need is something like DynDNS to help you with setting the link up for it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DynDNS. That is what I have done on one other computer locally that is also using joomla on it.

How much customization do you want to be able to do? I believe Wordpress charges $99 a year for you to be able to fully customize CSS, JavaScript, PhP, etc.

If you don't mind only being able to have basic styling and functionality then go with Wordpress. Otherwise you could have full control of the design with Blogger which is all around free unless you want your own domain. (You can never have your own domain for free.)

Is your purpose to have a website where you'll write blog posts regularly? Go ahead and choose one of those free blogging sites if so.

Free web hosts compared: http://website-tuts.blogspot.com/2011/11/free-web-host-comparison_11.html

edit: I missed the part about the free database. Assuming you'd just want it to store comments then the free blogging sites would do. alternatively you could install Disqus, Intense Debate, or LiveFyre because those are better commenting systems (no database needed for those).

I use 000 web host, its a free web host which lets you use mysql / PHP.
